Nutritional value of Hemp

“Food has to have value, or we don't make it.
I don't make anything I don't like.
Hemp has value as a food, and we want to get it into people's diet."

A quote from Ruth Shamai, founder and owner of Ruth's Hemp Foods

In 1990 Ruth started an environmental mail order company from her home outside of Toronto, Canada, that eventually included hemp clothing. When she learned about the nutritional powers of the amazing hemp seed, she knew she had found her calling. She joined the lobby to legalize hemp in Canada and realized that goal in 1998. At that point, she saw the opportunity to bring together her personal passion for health food with a way to make a living by making truly nutritious and fabulous food.

Hemp has been legal to grow in Canada since April, 1998 when Health Canada amended the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. All that is required is obtaining a license from Health Canada.

Hemp is not marijuana! Hemp is not psychoactive. The psychoactive element of marijuana, THC, exists in hemp, but in amounts so small as to be insignificant. Marijuana contains about 60 times more THC than hemp. Ruthís hemp is tested in the field, and her hemp seed, oil, hemp nut and hemp meal are required to have less than 10 ppm THC, but in actual fact, NO THC can be detected in her products. As a matter of fact consuming Ruthís hemp products will not make you fail a urine test.

Big General Uses of Hemp

Hemp is an amazing plant. In addition to nutritional value, hemp has some amazing qualities that make it adaptive to multiple manufacturing applications. The stalk of the plant has long fibers on the outside, and short fibers on the inside. The solid long fibers are used for textiles, high quality acid free paper, and clothing, whereas the short fibers are used in newsprint paper, concrete (the roman aqueducts made out of hemp concrete are still standing) and can also be found in high end luxury car manufacturing for insulation, brake lining, and other building materials.

Hemp as Food
Food is always made from the seed. All you ever eat is the seed. Hemp is a protein complete with essential fatty acids and the very important trace minerals. It's a complete protein, and doesn't need to be augmented with other foods, as it has all the building blocks of foods. The seed itself is 1/3 protein, with 5 grams of protein in one tablespoon of shelled hempseed, and it's rich with Omega 3,6, and 9.

About the Hemp Seed
The inside of the hemp seed, also known as the hemp nut, is rich in both protein and oil. And the oil is one of the richest sources of essential fatty acids (EFAs). Essential Fatty Acids ensure healthy and fluid cell membranes. Hemp is a great source of protein. It has almost as much protein as whole (or fermented) soybeans. That means more than virtually any other protein source, including fish, beef, eggs, chicken or tofu. And although hemp doesn't have quite as much protein as whole soy, the percentage of Essential Amino Acids, is higher in hemp than soy. Also, hemp is not genetically modified, unlike most soy.

About Hemp Oil
Most hemp oil contains about 56% Omega 6 or Linoleic Acid (LA), 20% Omega 3 or Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA): almost a 3:1 ratio of Omega 6:3. As well, hemp oil contains about 3% gamma linolenic acid (GLA), a rare fatty acid found primarily in evening primrose and borage.

Ruth's Certified Organic Hemp Oil contains a 2:1 ratio of Omega 6:3, i.e., less Omega 6, more Omega 3 (as well as the GLA). This is important since North American diets have an overabundance of Omega 6, but need more Omega 3. Hemp oil is the only food oil that contains Omega 6, 3 and GLA.

Are you Hemp Deficient?
Why is all that important? The symptoms of an Omega 3 deficiency include dry and/or scaly skin, weak immune system, poor motor co-ordination, high blood pressure and low metabolic rate. Omega 6 fatty acids (notably linoleic and gamma-linolenic) have been the source of many studies. They have been used to treat and prevent many disease states such as eczema, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, circulatory problems, and PMS.
